These things happen every day to kids that are left unprotected with a smart phone, computer and social media, including Snapchat and Instagram!
But it doesn’t have to happen to you!
How do I know?
It was a beautiful fall day when I answered the phone. “Hey sis, what’s going on?” Between sobbing, my sister cried “They just walked Alan out in handcuffs…. The police and FBI searched the house and his room, they took his phone and his computer and all they will say is that he bought drugs online. I’m going to the station now, but I wanted you to know first.”
That day was a turning point for our family. Up until this point, my 15 year old nephew, a Boy Scout working on his Eagle and an A and B student, had never been in trouble. He played baseball and was in the band. His dream was to join the Air Force after school and be a pilot. How did he end up here?
It was pretty easy actually. He had been at a party with kids from school and as they talked tech stuff, they thought, “Wow, wouldn’t it be “cool” if we could purchase some marijuana from the dark web?” And, my nephew said, “hmm, let’s see if it’s possible.” And he whipped out his iPhone and in a few clicks was surfing the dark web for some cheap weed, which he purchased with a Target gift card.
The consequences of this stupid decision were: handcuffed, interrogated, his iPhone and computer confiscated, placed in a rehab facility for 30 days (even though he had never done drugs and didn’t smoke the weed that was bought), expelled from school, kicked out of the Boy Scouts and with a felony on his record couldn’t join the Air Force. All of his dreams and goals were gone before he was old enough to drive!
One stupid decision with a smartphone changed the entire course of his life and ruined his future!
Now I’m a mom on a mission. As a cyber-security expert for over 20 years, if this can happen to my family, it can happen to anyone. My sister had the classic, NMK Syndrome, which is, I raised my kid better than that, they’re a good kid and they know better, they would never do that, which is known as Not My Kid Syndrome. I didn’t want another family to go through what my family has, so my husband and I wrote a book to educate parents on what their kids are really doing with smart phones, the dangers that kids can get into online, the gaming craze, and social media. The book has real ways that you can protect your kids from ruining their futures and destroying their lives.
